So you are going to be attending a wedding soon and you have no idea what to wear. When choosing a dress to wear to a wedding there are some basic things you will want to keep in mind.
First of all what time of the year is the wedding being held? Summer, Spring, Fall or Winter? The season will also influence the dress choice you make. Nice light breathable dresses that expose more skin for the hotter months and thicker heavier dresses for the colder months. Most weddings will have at least some time spent outside for photos etc so one needs to prepare for these parts of the wedding day.
Secondly, what type of a wedding will it be? Black tie, formal, semi-formal, informal, or perhaps a specially themed wedding? This will heavily influence the type of dress you wear. You dont want to stand out like a sore thumb because everybody except you did the research.
A very popular type of wedding these days is a beach wedding. This calls for a unique type of attire. Its outdoors so you will need to consider the elements of the weather e.g. wind and sun. If it happens to be windy can your dress cope? Or will you be constantly battling with your dress and the wind. A dress that is better fitted and not too long so it doesnt drag in the sand would be most suitable.
If you have skin that burns easily in the sun you may need a dress that covers more skin than you usually like too or be sure to bring and use plenty of sunscreen. Then of course theres the issue of footwear. You may prefer to go barefoot while on the sandy beach and wear those gorgeous heels when off the sand. Or, you may choose to wear some dressy flip flops or sandals instead.
Further you might need to keep in mind the culture of the couple getting married. Ethnic marriage ceremonies may include ethnic styles of dress. If most of the people attending the wedding are going to wear such ethnic styles of clothing you may choose to do the same so as not to stand out in a negative way. Check with the bride and groom that there arent any special requirements or expectations that have been place upon you, the wedding guest.
You will also need to consider your body shape or type when choosing the cut of a dress. Only you know what dress looks best on your body type so be sure to try on a few different outfits on and even get some honest opinions from friends as to how it looks on you.
If you want to look slimmer then you should consider wearing a dress that has vertical lines. Conversely if you want to make your figure look fuller e.g. your bust, then horizontal lines in those areas will create the illusion of fullness.
You may consider coordinating the color of your dress with the colors of the wedding. Find out what colors the bridesmaids will be wearing and you could consider something that complements them. Of course you dont want to wear something thats too similar because you are the guest and it would be embarrassing if someone mistook you for a member of the bridal party.
It may seem strange but when trying on the dress you plan to wear to the wedding be sure to also try on the underwear that you plan to wear that day. Perhaps it shows through or creates unbecoming lines in the dress that others can see. Also you want to be sure you will be comfortable the entire day. You could even consider wearing the dress for an entire day before you attend the wedding just to make sure it remains comfortable for a long period of time.
Not only the dress but the shoes also. It would be good to break the shoes in before the big day. Be sure you can dance the night away in those heels or whatever you choose to wear that day.
Jewellery is also another nice accessory to any wedding guest outfit. Try on different necklaces and earrings when trying out that dress. Even cheap jewellery can add something special to any wedding guest attire.
Furthermore, you should try doing a trial run on your make-up. Be sure you have everything in place before hand, all the right colors to go with your outfit. The vision in your mind may not be the same as reality so try on the dress with the jewellery and shoes etc but also see how your makeup ideas work with the outfit beforehand.
Finally be sure to allow for any weight gain or loss between now and the wedding. If you already know which dress you will wear but you haven’t bought it yet you may consider buying it closer to the wedding day to ensure you purchase the perfect size. Maybe you have high hopes about losing some weight before the big day but those hopes don’t actually get realized. So just wait until a little closer to the date before you buy the dress to ensure the best fit.
