A towering confection of icing rosettes and flourishes topped by a breathtaking lead crystal pair of doves in flight, is that your idea of the perfect wedding cake? Breath taking for your checking account too as top quality cakes can cost as much as $10.00 per serving. That means a cake to serve 85 guests can cost you $850.00. A wedding cake is something that no wedding reception should be without. If you are among the growing number of brides who are planning their wedding cake on a shoestring budget, the following tips will help you decide if a cheap and easy wedding cake is for you. Remember, cheap and easy doesn’t mean tasteless and unattractive.

One alternative to purchasing an expensive cake is to make your own. If you aren’t creative in the kitchen, you can always enlist the help of a friend or family member who love to bake. By putting your heads together, chances are you’ll come up with an idea for the perfect cake. Ice the cake with your favorite rich butter cream frosting and then decorate with fresh flowers. Many flowers are edible including roses, pansies, marigolds, nasturtiums, and lots more. Just be careful that you use organically grown flowers so there won’t be any pesticide residue.

Decorating with silk flowers is another alternative. Be sure you remove the flowers before serving. And finally you can buy pre made frosting decorations and attach them yourself to the cake at the time of the reception.

Cupcake cakes are increasing in popularity. They are inexpensive to make and allow you to be as creative as you want to be. It is very easy to mix up several different flavors that will satisfy a variety of tastes. (After all, not all guests are fond of traditional flavors such as chocolate or yellow cake.) White frosted cupcakes can be ordered through the bakery department of your grocers and decorated with frosting rosebuds to denote the different flavors.

To display the cake, cupcake stands are available in many styles and price ranges. With a bit of research you should be able to choose one of several that you have found appealing. Cake stands can also be made by hot gluing clear glass plates to clear juice glasses or over turned wine glasses. If you decide to do this don’t do more than three layers. If you have more guests than the cupcakes you can fit on your cake stand tier, have more than one cake stand. Rose petals from organic roses can be sprinkled on the cake stands and around the cupcakes for a very decorative effect.

Another option is to order a small ‘bride and groom only’ cake. This way you will have something to cut, when the time comes. You can still use the cake topper of your choice, as well.

Purchase large sheet cakes to serve to remaining guests. Again, you have the option of providing more than one flavor for hard to please guests. The sheet cakes can be precut and brought out on serving plates after the bride and groom have cut their cake.

You can have a fabulous wedding cake on a shoestring budget.
